Risks
- All parts of the flamingo flower plant contain needlelike crystals of insoluble calcium oxalate. Chewing and swallowing the plant can irritate the mouth and airways of dogs. This triggers a burning sensation on the mouth and tongue and also causes the throat to swell, resulting in breathing problems.
- The calcium oxalate crystals in the flamingo flower plant can also induce gastric upset in dogs. In severe cases, it can contribute to liver and kidney damage.
