- The peony has a naturally occurring toxic agent to dogs, which is known as paenol.
- Gastrointestinal problems are the most common adverse reactions caused by ingesting a peony. Dogs tend to suffer from nausea, abdominal cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea. Late treatment increases the risk of extreme dehydration.
