Risks
- All parts of the rhododendron including its honey, leaves, petals, pollen, and stem are toxic to dogs. The plant’s toxic compounds can seep into the vase’s water too.
- The rhododendron produces highly toxic grayanotoxins. Ingesting as little as 0.2% of your dog’s body weight is enough to induce poisoning.
- The poisonous compounds found in the plant affect the heart and skeletal system of canines. It can cause leg paralysis, slow heart rate, depression, and seizures.
- It takes around 6 hours for the first signs of rhododendron toxicity to manifest in dogs, which are vomiting and hypersalivation. Fatality may occur within 1-2 days of poisoning.
