- Winter cherry contains a toxin called solanocapsine, which is present in the leaves and berries of the plant. The highest concentrations of this dangerous compound are found in the berries.
- Ingesting the leaves or berries of the winter cherry can cause mouth and throat irritation. Stomach cramps, hypersalivation, and vomiting may also occur.
- Severe cases of winter cherry poisonous come with dangerous symptoms such as spasms, respiratory issues, and paralysis.
