Can dogs eat Golden needles?

Caution. Dogs can eat golden needles, also known as Dried lily buds or Gum jum, in moderation. These provide beneficial vitamins and anti-inflammatory properties. However, raw golden needles should be avoided. Always cook them thoroughly to remove harmful toxins before serving them to your dog.

Benefits

Golden needles are a good source of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system.
Golden needles also contain vitamins B1 and B2 which promote healthy brain function.
They also have anti-inflammatory properties.

Risks

Fresh golden needles (not to be mistaken for golden needle mushrooms) are toxic to dogs if not cooked properly.
Golden needles may trigger allergic reactions in some dogs.

Servings

To cook fresh golden needles, boil the vegetable for 5 minutes to reduce the toxicity. Then soak in cold water for 2 hours.
Dried golden needles must be rehydrated first. To remove dirt and impurities, rinse the golden needles and then cover them with boiling water. Soak for 30 minutes or until they have softened. Drain and rinse under running water. Squeeze the excess water, then cook without seasoning.
Never feed fresh golden needles to a dog.
