  • Anise has a catnip-like effect on dogs. Dogs get motivated to follow the scent of anise. Anise oil has been used on lures for racing greyhounds to encourage them to chase the lure around the track. Dogs may end up high or hyperactive after ingesting it. For this reason, anise should only be used as an occasional treat.
  • If consumed in large amounts, anise seeds can negatively affect a dog’s digestive system and nervous system, causing diarrhea and an upset stomach.
  • Anise seeds may also cause nervous system depression. Symptoms include a lowered heart rate, a decreased respiration rate, and unconsciousness, and it can possibly lead to a coma or fatality.
