Risks
- Some consider the birch dog-friendly while others believe that it is poisonous to dogs. Small concentrations of xylitol can be found in the bark of birch trees. Ingesting 75 to 100 milligrams of xylitol per kilogram of a dog's weight can lead to toxicity and potentially kidney failure.
- Symptoms to look out for if you suspect your dog has ingested parts of the birch tree are lack of energy, inappetence, vomiting, and diarrhea.
- Munching on a trunk or bark of the birch tree may cause its wood splinters to get stuck in dogs' mouths and digestive tracts. It can lead to oral and digestive abrasion as well as bleeding.
