- The Scotch broom carries significant amounts of the alkaloids cytisine and sparteine. Ingesting it can impede blood circulation and central nervous system function in canines.
- Some of the most common adverse effects that may occur after consumption of the Scotch broom are nausea, inappetence, vomiting, and diarrhea. Heart problems such as a fast heart rate may also manifest.
