- The buttercup produces ranunculin, which is a compound that is converted into the toxin protoanemonin when chewed. The flowers of this plant contain the highest concentration of this poisonous agent.
- Ingesting the buttercup may lead dogs to experience hypersalivation, vomiting, diarrhea, and weakness. Without proper treatment, health complications like tremors, seizures, and paralysis may take place.
- Skin contact with this plant can also cause adverse side effects in dogs, such as painful inflammation, rashes, and itchiness.
