- The sagebrush buttercup produces ranunculin, a poisonous compound that breaks down to form a toxic oil called protoanemonin, which can cause skin irritations, blisters, burning, and itching. If ingested, it can cause gastrointestinal irritation, which triggers vomiting and bloody diarrhea, accompanied by weakness and dizziness.
- The toxic oil of the sagebrush buttercup can also irritate the eyes.
