- Calcium carbonate exists naturally as a mineral that originates from limestone, marble, and shells. As a food supplement, it serves as a dietary calcium source that promotes bone development, nerve function, and muscle contraction. It also supports healthy teeth and bones.
- As a food additive to dog food, calcium carbonate helps balance dietary calcium deficiencies and maintain the proper calcium-to-phosphorous ratio.
- Calcium carbonate may be prescribed as an antacid in specific situations and often for short-term use to treat mild stomach upset or indigestion in dogs. Some vets may recommend calcium carbonate as a phosphate binder in dogs with kidney disease.
Risks
- Large breed puppies are at risk of developing skeletal deformities and kidney calcification (hypercalcaemia) when calcium carbonate supplements exceed recommended levels.
- Giving dogs high doses of calcium carbonate negatively impacts the body's ability to absorb zinc and magnesium.
Servings
- The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) recommends 1.25 mg calcium/kcal for adult dogs on a dry matter basis (excluding moisture). Before adding calcium supplements to your dog's diet, always get guidance from a veterinarian for the correct dosage based on your dog's age, weight, and health condition.
