Risks
- Selenium toxicity (selenosis) can occur if dogs ingest too much selenium yeast. Signs include hair loss, brittle nails, gastrointestinal upset, lethargy, and in severe cases, liver necrosis and death.
- The margin between a safe amount and a toxic dose is very narrow, particularly in puppies and small breeds.
- Chronic exposure to high levels may cause joint problems and nail deformities in dogs.
Servings
- Selenium yeast consists of Saccharomyces cerevisiae that has been fortified with selenium. It’s added to commercial dog food and nutritional supplements at regulated amounts.
- The maximum tolerable selenium content should not exceed 2mcg/g to prevent selenium poisoning.
- Do not add selenium yeast to a dog’s diet unless directed by a vet, as most complete dog foods already contain selenium.
