Can dogs have Copper Sulfate?
Benefits
- Copper sulfate is an inorganic salt formed by the reaction of copper with sulfuric acid. It's a mineral that's important for various physiological functions in dogs, including enzyme activity, iron metabolism, and connective tissue formation.
- Sufficient intake of copper is necessary for normal growth and reproductive health. It also supports the nervous system and plays a role in bone formation.
Risks
- Copper sulfate in high doses is toxic and can cause copper storage disease (also known as cooper-associated hepatopathy, which is the accumulation of copper in the liver that can eventually lead to liver damage and liver failure. Dog breeds that are predisposed to this condition are Bedlington Terriers, Dobermans, and Labrador Retrievers. Toxicity symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, lethargy and liver damage.
- Copper sulfate is considered a controversial ingredient in commercial dog foods because it has lower bioavailability compared to copper proteinate. Because it is not as easily and as efficiently absorbed by the body, copper sulfate may accumulate in the liver over time.

- According to AAFCO guidelines, dog foods should contain copper levels between 7.3 and 250 mg/kg according to the life stage and breed of the dog.
- Copper sulfate supplements for humans should not be administered to dogs as these supplements are formulated according to the human adult metabolism and may include additives that are harmful for the canine system.
- Copper sulfate or copper sulfate pentahydrate is typically listed as an ingredient in commercial dog food and is used according to AAFCO standards for pet food formulations.
- When copper supplementation is required because of a deficiency, it should only be given under the direction of a veterinarian, with dosages tailored specifically for dogs.
