- The sago palm has a highly toxic substance called cycasin, which is present in all parts of the plant. The sago palm's seeds have more concentrations of cyasin compared to its fronds, making them extremely toxic. 50% of ingestion cases of sago palm in animals lead to fatality.
- Side effects that may occur after ingesting sago palm are vomiting, excessive thirst, jaundice, and bloody feces. Health complications like seizures and liver failure may arise if sago palm poisoning in dogs is left untreated.
- Symptoms of sago palm poisoning in dogs tend to appear 15 minutes after ingestion. In some cases, it would take several hours for them to manifest.
